A Father’s Day memory, when a daughter ran with her dad

JO ANN KIRKLAND PHOTO John Quinn with his daughter — and our reporter — Halsey, at the finish line of the 2015 10K.

This story appeared in the June 25, 2015 issue of the Reporter

The 3-mile marker of the 36th annual Shelter Island 10K Run was a lot more than just a milestone, much more than a sigh of relief as I approached the halfway mark.

The white picket fence and green grass of the golf course, the rush of the race and the thud of sneakers on concrete were all familiar. For years I stood by that fence, handing out high-fives and words of encouragement to the racers, but I was always waiting for one person — my dad, John Quinn.

Sign held high above my head, brimming with pride and excitement as he emerged from the woodsy road, that was all I ever knew of the 10K.

Until Last Saturday, when I ran by that fence cheering him on as he ran next to me on the day before Father’s Day, rather than cheering from the sidelines. As we passed, the memories became just a flashback, reduced to a second, a moment in time of something that now felt much bigger.

I have never been much of a runner, that’s always been my dad’s thing. He’s finished marathons, countless triathlons, including  a half Ironman. He wakes up every day to the silent darkness of the early morning (shortly after I’ve gone to sleep) to spend hours in the gym before work.

When I was about 10, I stepped up to the starting line of a local 5K, confident that I could keep up with the stride of my 6-foot 2-inch partner. I spent the second half of the race with an angry grimace, walking my way to the finish line, a few fingers pressed firmly into the stitch below my ribcage. Despite my cranky complaining and stubbornly slow pace, my dad walked with me the entire time, crossing the finish line with me well past our goal of 30 minutes.

Standing beside him in the rain at the starting line of the 10K Saturday, I bounced from foot to foot. Adrenaline had kicked in like a shot of espresso. I looked at him as he calmly waited for the gun. He’s done this more times than I’ve laced up my sneakers for a run. For a brief moment, I feared a repeat of the last time we lined up to race together, so many years ago.

But this time was different.

I had trained, starting with short, daily treadmill runs up to longer outdoor runs the month before the race. And even with a constant rain, it happened to be one of those days that you feel like you can run forever. Maybe the feeling came because it was my father at my side, or the excitement of the race, or the cheers of spectators who sacrificed the dry comfort of the indoors to root for friends, family and countless strangers. Or maybe it was just luck.

Along the way I waved to the people I knew on the sidelines. Each time it gave me an unexpected burst of energy and confidence,  even when those crowded along the edge of the road clapping and shouting were complete strangers.

My dad, seasoned runner, racer and triathlete, matched my pace for the first 3 miles. After we passed the halfway timer, he began to slow down. I wanted to run with him and cross the finish line together for the first time the day before Father’s Day.

But he refused to let me slacken my pace.

“Just like everything in life,” he said through heavy breaths, “there comes a time where I have to give you a push and say, ‘Go for it.’”

For the next two miles I retreated into my thoughts and let my body take over. I climbed up the small but cruel hill before Second Bridge. “Where you start to ask yourself why you signed up for this,” my dad had told me the night before when he took me on a drive through the course. It took only one look at the view of Dering Harbor — masts of sailboats dark against the horizon, the chop of the water like the texture of a painting — for me to forget about my burning leg muscles.

As soon as I saw the flags that signaled the start of “Joey’s Mile,” with each flag representing a fallen soldier or Marine, my stride turned into a bounding pace. Training for and running a 10K isn’t easy for most and at the 5th mile we were sweating and huffing and hurting.

But the flags that line the edges of Joey’s Mile — too many of them — put things in perspective during that final stretch. We finally answered the question we’ve asked ourselves since the 3rd mile: Why did we sign up for this? Why do we run? Answers: For fun, to relax, to spend time with people or maybe to be alone, for the challenge, to see the beautiful Island, to test our limits and to build strength.

We also run because we want to, and because we can. And, for that, we are so lucky.

I passed the finish line alone, making a time faster than I’ve ever finished. I walked back to the fence where I waited for my dad to run in just a few minutes later, cheering him on, just like I used to.

It took nearly 19 years for me to finally follow in his footsteps.

Or, rather, for him to follow in mine.

Village and town reps to resolve mooring field issue

MARTIN BURKE PHOTO Morning light over Dering Harbor.

Dering Harbor Village Trustee Patrick Parcells told the Town Board at its Tuesday work session that remarks about the mooring field in Dering Harbor by former mayor Tim Hogue the previous week were “badly misrepresented.”

Mr. Hogue told the Town Board the week before that a long-term agreement existed between the village and town giving to Dering Harbor control of moorings within 500 feet of the shoreline.

But, he said about two years ago, the buoys in the water marking that line were taken out and not put back at the start of the following season as they had been in the past.

At Mr. Hogue’s request, Supervisor Gary Gerth sent a letter to the Village Board last week requesting that it delay a vote that was slated for June 8 on issues relating to the mooring field; reinstall the buoys marking the 500-foot area; and agree to create a subcommittee of village and town representatives to discuss the issues.

Mr. Parcells said that a statement made by the former mayor that there was no communication between village and town officials was incorrect, citing a discussion between Trustee Clora Kelly and a town Bay Constable that had rendered information that the village actions were inconsistent with town code and no action could be taken until the differences were resolved.

James Eklund, a member of the Water Management Advisory Council (WMAC), was at Tuesday’s meeting and said there never had been a written agreement in terms of establishing the mooring field. Instead there was a verbal agreement between the village and WMAC.

The village didn’t act unilaterally in not taking action on the buoys, Mr. Parcells said.
The Town Board and Mr. Parcells agreed there would be a meeting with representatives of both entities to resolve the issue of the mooring field. Mr. Parcells said the Village Board wants to work with town officials to establish better communication.

Both sides agreed it’s important that a record of agreements needs to be codified to establish a clear history of how and why certain policies are in place.

Dering Harbor election results

Dering Harbor elections were held on Tuesday, June 18.

Current trustees Ari Benacerraf and Clora Kelly were re-elected, receiving 34 votes each. Three write-in votes were recorded, two in the name of John T. Colby III and one listing John T. Colby, Jr.

Village voters came out to support a proposed change for future elections, moving them to the Friday of Memorial Day weekend to enable as many voters as possible to participate.

The vote on the referendum was 34 votes Yes, and 3 votes No.

In other Dering Harbor news:

At the June 8 meeting of The Dering Harbor Board of Trustees, Dan Calabro and his wife JoAnn informed the board of their intention to sue the village over the new water tank installation, which they said was affecting a piece of property they own in the village.

In a long discussion, that included Mayor Betsy Morgan, Village Counsel Wayne D. Bruyn and Trustee Patrick Parcells — who has served as the liaison to the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA — the Calabros stated that the tank had been moved from its original planned site onto their property, a 164- by 45-foot parcel. The board stated that the tank was not on their property. Mr. Parcells said that the original water mains dating to 1917 do pass under the parcel. He conceded that three valves might be on their land and said he could quickly have them moved. The Calabros complained that someone had accessed their land and cleared it to support the water installation.

“We did some clearing on your land,” Mr. Parcells agreed. “We won’t charge you for that.”
Board members said it was likely they were not aware that this piece of land abutting village property belonged to the Calabros. If they had, Trustee Karen Kelsey said, it would have been better to notify the Calabros before it was cleared.

Mr. Calabro acknowledged he would have to gather information to support his complaint, including a survey of his property. Mayor Morgan asked him to “please do so with the understanding that all of this has been considered with a great deal of gravity and seriousness, and I’m insulted, actually.”

Mr. Calabro responded, “I’m actually insulted, so don’t turn this into that.”

“Well, we’re even,” the mayor said.

Mr. Calabro said he was raising his complaint because someone named Jason Himes from SCWA had alerted him to the problem involving his land. The ensuing discussion clarified that Mr. Himes worked for the county health department, not SCWA, and had contacted Mr. Calabro, with whom he had a long-standing relationship. When the board asked him to explain exactly what problem Mr. Himes was talking about, Mr. Calabro said he had an upcoming meeting with Mr. Himes to determine that: “About what, I’ll let you know.”

The board passed a number of measures at their June 8 meeting that had been the subject of debate for several months. The regulation to expand summertime restrictions on noise-generating activities to include not only construction but also specific property maintenance and landscaping work finally passed after being held over through nine meetings. The long-running debate extended through the winter and spring months.

A proposed regulation limiting anchoring in the waters off Dering Harbor was not voted on. The Trustees want to spend time coordinating with their counterparts on the Town Board before making any changes to the regulations.

Giving cancer patients ‘a fighting chance’

You’re told you have cancer, a diagnosis that is one of the most harrowing things to hear from your doctor.

Fighting Chance is an East End nonprofit that aims to help cancer patients and their loved ones deal with psychological and practical difficulties that often can’t be navigated alone. Based in Sag Harbor, the group also provides critical support in maneuvering through the medical bureaucracy that surrounds care and treatment. Every service provided is free.

Duncan Darrow, founder and chairman of Fighting Chance, was inspired to start the organization after his mother’s death from lung cancer. “It fell on me to be her primary carer,” he said. “She was fearful. So was I. She had a million questions. So did I.”

Mr. Darrow said that there seemed to be a lack of infrastructure that could help him and his mother to deal with the present and the future. Inspired to help others venturing down a similar path, he completed rigorous training courses to become a volunteer with East End Hospice.

But even with that remarkable, caring institution, he said he found holes in the system. For instance, there wasn’t enough long-term care for patients, so he came up with the idea for a paramedical nonprofit on the East End where people could go, free of charge, and get medical questions answered, find support groups, seek assistance if needed, and get counseling,

Fighting Chance, founded in 2002, is now the nation’s oldest and largest free counseling center.

“Fighting Chance is there for the patient from week one of their diagnosis, helps deal with their feelings of hopelessness and anxiety, and helps them receive the treatment they need,” Mr. Darrow said.
Over the 17 years that the group has existed, he’s seen hopeful changes in cancer treatment and society’s attitudes towards the disease.

“People don’t whisper cancer anymore,” he said. “There’s not the stigma that used to exist. Now that people are more out in the open about it, it means that the wider community can help.”

Cancer treatment has also made some hopeful improvements over the last two decades. In particular, Mr. Darrow cited the still-developing field of “immunotherapies” — therapies that enlist and strengthen the power of a patient’s immune system to attack tumors.

Fighting Chance is entirely funded by private donations, large and small, from individuals and businesses in the community. For example, thanks to Hampton Jitney, cancer patients from Fighting Chance can receive free transport to appointments in the city for free.

The organization also holds regular fundraisers to raise awareness and reach out to the broader community.

On Sunday, August 4, 2019, a Charity Cocktail Reception will be held on Shelter Island at 14 Harbor Lane in Dering Harbor, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person.

All proceeds go towards supporting Fighting Chance. To purchase tickets or send a contribution, call Fighting Chance at 631-725-4646 or go to fightingchance.org and click on “Shelter Island Event.”

Dog days of summer: Board discusses changes in ordinance

REPORTER FILE PHOTO

Complaints about barking dogs are ongoing and the Town Board is studying revisions to its Town Code to deal with the problem.

The problem surfaced at a board meeting last month when neighbors of a residence in the Center, which houses up to 14 dogs at a time, said they have been afflicted by dogs howling at all hours of the day and night.

“It’s torture,” one person told the board at the July meeting, about more than 20 years of dogs barking. A man who manages a business nearby said the same, and they were backed up by Police Chief Jim Read. Chief Read’s department has written 23 tickets for such violations in six years, he said at last month’s meeting. Since then, tickets have been issued on a weekly basis.

Over six years there have been 83 calls to the police complaining of dogs barking. “This isn’t normal,” one neighbor put in. “It’s at a scale most people would not believe. It can go on for hours all night.”

During its Tuesday work session, board members discussed parts of the code that need to be revised to coordinate with New York State regulations, but also to crack down on dog owners who fail to respond to instructions from police and animal control officers when their pets are a nuisance to the community.

Town Attorney Bob DeStefano Jr. said the board would be careful about not penalizing dog owners, or those fostering dogs, when their animals aren’t posing a problem.

For example, the Town Code was going to limit the number of dogs an owner or someone fostering dogs could have. But Animal Control Officer Beau Payne told the board he knew there were people fostering as many as five dogs and there were never problems reported. By limiting the number to two dogs, he would be placing these people into being non-compliant, something he thought was unwise.

On the other hand, there are people with two dogs who bark for long periods of time with owners who fail to stop them. Those are cases board members want to control, perhaps by raising the penalties for violations or, in the most serious cases, seizing the animals and impounding them while giving owners a period of time to remedy the situation or give up the animal.

Mr. DeStefano planned to tweak the draft further before scheduling it for a public hearing, possibly as soon as August 30.

In other business, the Town Board:
• Agreed to monitor Red Knot birds that are expected to land on the Island on their way to other climates, but not nest here. Suffolk County requires that the monitoring occur for seven days prior to dredging projects in Coecles Harbor and West Neck.
• Expects to offer drain maintenance services to Shelter Island Heights and Dering Harbor at the rate of $280 an hour. The cost back in 2015 was $240, but costs have gone up and the town is not looking to make a profit on the services, just to cover costs.
